New Year’s Resolutions 2009

It’s time to share my New Year’s Resolutions for 2009.  I have been going over my weight loss and fitness goals for 2009 the past few days and would like to share.

I would like to lose 50 lbs this year.  My short term goal for that would be to lose at least 4 lbs every month which is the healthy way to go.  I had lost over 80 lbs since 2005 when I first started my new lifestyle but gained back 30+ pounds.  Yesterday I posted about my recent weight loss struggles.

I’m not going to dwell on the past.  It’s a NEW YEAR and I’m ready to go.

My plan is to hit the gym on T/W/Th/Sa/Su with my wonderful hubby.  Madelyn Fernstrom from ivillage health says you should have a ‘diet buddy’ and I agree.  The support I get from Kev when we are on the Elliptical and in Spin class keeps me going.  He always pushes me to do better and says kind words along the way.  Everyone should find a ‘diet buddy’.

Sa/Su- Spin class and weights

Monday and Friday will be a rest and recover day off from the gym but I will do some form of activity whether it be in-home workouts, Stability Ball work, etc.

I will keep track of my water intake and I’m pretty sure I’m going back to keeping a food journal.  I may skip counting calories in the beginning to see if I can manage with just staying accountable to what I eat.

I will weigh in every Monday and post my results on Wednesday.

I will take measurements and photo updates every month and post those to the blog.

A few other goals I have for myself are to follow a few online challenges, sell or donate my ‘big’ clothes that are taking space in my closet and I would like to fit into a few pairs of pants/jeans and tank tops that are waiting for me!

I’m keeping this short because I don’t want to overwhelm myself at the beginning.

Here is a Resolutions vs. Goals post that my friend Roni made on Jan. 1st 2008.  I had the great pleasure of meeting Roni this past year in Chicago and she is a TRUE inspiration.

Have you posted your weight loss/fitness goals for 2009? If so, please feel free to share your link so we can all support one another.  May 2009 be YOUR BEST YEAR YET!

Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Many of you know that hubs is the chef in this abode and that I don’t really cook unless it’s something I can bake.  I’m a pretty good baker so they say.  But I have to tell you, I was craving some brussel sprouts (who would have ever thought I would end up liking these smelly things ha ha) and picked up a bag of them as I was shopping at Trader Joe’s the other day.

Last night I was doing a quick Google search on how to cook them and I chose a roasting method.  I am usually one to follow a recipe but I wanted to do this on my own so I took ideas from a few and just put it together on my own.  Go me!

Angie’s Roasted Brussel Sprouts

Here are the ingredients I used

Roasted Brussel Sprouts ingredients

Roasted Brussel Sprouts ingredients

  • Trader Joe’s Brussel Sprouts
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
  • Green onions
  • Garlic Cloves
  • Sea Salt
  • Pepper
  • Nutmeg
  • Garlic powder (not pictured, last minute sprinkle)

Heat stove to 400 degrees

Cut up 4 green onions (only white part), 2 garlic cloves and then cut the brussel sprouts up in halves and quarters.  Pour EVOO over that, sprinkle sea salt, pepper and nutmeg over that.  Mix up to coat.  Before roasting, I sprinkled some garlic powder.

Baked in glass dish for 25 minutes, stirring once.  The finished product is below.  We thought they turned out pretty good (especially for me not really following a true recipe) but hubs recommends that next time I cover it and add more liquid.

Enjoy!

Do you like brussel sprouts?  If so, how do you prefer them cooked?

My Recent Weight Loss and Fitness Struggles

I figured what better day to post because 2009 WILL be better and tomorrow I will be posting my weight loss and fitness goals/resolutions for 2009.  I have been battling my weight for as long as I can remember.  It’s always a struggle and has been so easy for me to fall back into old patterns this past year.

I was doing great and then just started going backwards.  I had to stop kickboxing (Turbo Kick and Turbo Jam) and that really knocked the wind out of me as I burned the most calories doing that 3 times a week.  I haven’t been able to figure out how to make up for that but I will.  I feel horrible that I have gained back all I worked so hard to lose.

But there really are no excuses, I just need to to gain control and focus.  It’s almost like I’m starting over.  I had lost over 80+ pounds and gained back over 30 lbs.  THAT is not good and it all needs to come back off plus more.  I’m not going to harp on this but I wanted to post so that those of you who read my blog and struggle know that

1)  There will always be struggles we have to work through

2)   It takes time and dedication

and

3)  You are not alone

It’s time for me to re-commit.  I know how great I felt every time I exercised and hopped on the scale and saw a loss.  The inch-loss was a shock to me especially when I was able to go from a size 26/28 to a size 14/16.  I HAVE to keep going!  Will you help me stay accountable?  Also, please share any tips you have that could help with accountability.

Did you have any weight loss and/or fitness struggles this past year? Feel free to share them here so we can put them behind us, wipe the slate clean and move forward.  I’m commited to helping you by helping myself and to keep sharing my journey with you.

Bye bye 2008.

My Workouts for the Week of 12/1-12/7 2008

This past week hubby and I were down with a terrible cold so there is not much to write home about as far as exercise goes.  Ha ha!  The only day I worked out was yesterday.  We went to spin class for a special class where you find your true cardiac age or something like that.  I don’t really understand it all but turns out I’m at the right age, hubs is 4 years younger.  We weren’t supposed to work out today due to that class but I’m feeling much better and look forward to working out at the resort fitness center in Jamaica.  Hopefully that will happen and we can burn some good calories and make it a great start to each day.

How was your week?

I won’t be blogging much if at all while away so I hope you have a great week.  I’ll be sure to post updates and pictures when we return.

Stretching Exercises

Fit and Healthy Lifestyle Tips Friday is here again.

Today’s Tip: Make Stretching Exercises a part of your routine

I have personally been doing some research on stretching exercises for your knee because of my recent knee issues.  Stretching increases your flexibility and lengthens muscles but it does not guarantee that you won’t still have sore muscles and aches.  It does help prevent injuries though.  When stretching, you want to use mild tension and be very cautious that you don’t overstretch.

I have heard different opinions on warm up stretching.  Some say that you should only stretch upon cool down when the muscles are warm and pliable but many say to do both warm up and cool down stretching.  What are your thoughts?

Of course, we all know it’s best to talk to a fitness professional about specific stretching exercises that are the right fit for you.

I have learned quite a bit about stretching exercises and hope that by doing them, my knee will be on the mend.

Weekly Weigh In: December 3

Oh yes there was a change this week and not a good one.  I gained a pound but you know what?  I’m not too worried about it.  I went and tried on a ton of clothes at Kohl’s and many fit nicely so I’m happy about that.  I was able to get a lot of summer clothes at a great price for our trip to Jamaica next week.  Very excited!

Current Weight: 203
Goal Weight: 135-140
Pounds left to go: 60+

How did you do this past week?
