Do you count calories?

Counting calories has not been easy for me to accomplish. For the first time since starting my new lifestyle in 2005, I am finally keeping an actual food journal and I count calories by plugging in everything I eat during the day at The Daily Plate. They offer a free way to count calories and also have a Gold paid version available.

The first time I tried tracking calories back in July 2007 was so frustrating to me to have to keep reading nutritional labels if the product wasn’t listed on one of the calorie counting websites. I would have to keep running back and forth to the kitchen to get the product which was a pain but I have been successfully keeping up with it since January 16th, 2008 thanks to The Daily Plate.

I really never wanted to count calories but after talking to a nutritionist who recommended The Daily Plate, I gave it the good old college try and it’s working. I find myself checking my food journal to see how many calories I have left for the day and I’m able to then decide if I really want to eat that extra after dinner snack.

You must count everything you eat though, even down to the tiny piece of Trident gum you popped into your mouth, or it won’t work. It’s very important that you don’t cheat because you are then only cheating yourself.

Do you count calories? I would like to hear how you feel about it and what system you use.

We Joined a Fitness Center

Joining a fitness center has been a topic of discussion here in our home over the past few months. After quite a bit of research we decided to take the plunge and join one.

I would like to share with you some of the questions I think you should ask and other things to think about when joining a fitness center because it can be quite a financial commitment and you want to be sure that it will fit your needs.

The two things most important to us were the location and hours and that they offered classes plus of course the class schedule. Once you find a fitness center that will fit your specifications you’ll want to visit and do a tour of the facility.

Here is a list of items we personally looked for and questions we asked.

1) Will the club hours and class schedule fit our schedule?
2) Is the fitness center clean?
3) Do they offer a free guest pass to try out the facility?
4) Do they have a good variety of fitness equipment?

Read over the terms and agreement carefully and be sure to find out

5) How many months are you locked into the initial agreement?
6) What happens to the agreement if you move?
7) Is there a grace period where they give you a chance to cancel without penalty after initially joining if you happen to change your mind?
8 ) Will the fitness center offer a complimentary personal training session after joining to review how to use the fitness equipment, learn about the classes offered, etc.?

If you go in prepared and armed with some knowledge of what to look for, you’ll be better off. Please don’t let anyone try to push you into signing up if you are not totally sold on joining. You are in control.

We found a fitness center that fit our needs and we are extremely happy with our choice to join.

Do you have a membership to a fitness center, gym or health club? If so, feel free to comment and share your top tips of what one should look for when joining.

Great day at the gym

Excellent workout at the gym today. Working out with Kevin (my hubby) is so motivating. He keeps me going and encourages me to keep doing better whether it’s by telling me to bump my treadmill incline, offering me a high five and constantly telling me I can do it. We sure do have a great time together and his support means a lot to me.

It’s been one month now since we joined the fitness center. I have enjoyed getting to know the staff and we especially look forward to our Smoothie Saturday’s. Our fitness center has a smoothie bar and my favorite so far is the Peanut Butter. Kevin likes the fruity concoctions.

Kevin takes full advantage of the sauna almost every day that we go to the gym. He enjoys that a lot.

We try to go at least 5 days a week to get the most bang for our buck. Looking forward to going back tomorrow morning.
