Healthy Halloween Tips

It’s Fit & Healthy Friday Tip time.

Today’s Tip: Healthy Halloween Tips

The way I see it, everything in moderation. Set aside a few of your favorite special treats for yourself and if you want a few day’s worth, separate some into baggies and put out one baggie a day on the counter (or on top of the fridge so you’re kiddos don’t steal it from you LOL).

If you’re set on not eating candy at all (kudos to you), go ahead and prepare yourself a fall favorite like a yummy apple (have you tried the honey crisp apple? oh my), baked pumpkin seeds, banana bread, etc.

I personally don’t buy the candy to hand out until Halloween day. I will grab a few pieces of my favorite and pack a goodie bag for Kev to take to work but I make sure to pass out all of the candy out before the end of the night.

I’ll keep it real though and tell you that my favorite candy has always been the Reese’s Peanut Butter cup. Oh it’s sinful isn’t it? Feel free to share your favorite candy too.

Oh and do you have any healthy Halloween tips to share?

Remember all things in moderation!

Weekly Weigh In: October 29

It’s been a while since I weighed in.  As many of you know I have had a challenging few weeks and I wasn’t sure how my weigh in would go but it’s not too bad.

Current Weight: 195
Goal Weight: 135-140
Pounds left to go: 50+

How did you do this week?  Stay accountable!

National Potato Day

According to The Online Recipe Box, today, October 27th is National Potato Day.

Although I like both regular baked potatoes and sweet potatoes, I want to give the sweet potato some love.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes, sometimes called yams are very healthy for you

  • Rich in beta-carotene and packed with fiber
  • A sweet potato has almost 1/3 of the Vitamin C you need for one day
  • The sweet potato has a variety of skin and flesh colors. You are probably most familiar with the brown skin and orange flesh
  • Many other health benefits

I like my sweet potato grilled or baked in the oven although I really wanted one for lunch one day and just popped it into the microwave and it turned out great. You can make a wide variety of foods with sweet potatoes like soup, mashed potatoes, pies and more. I personally like baked whole sweet potatoes (minus the skin) and oven baked or grilled sweet potato fries. Yum, yum!

Do you like sweet potatoes? What is your favorite way to eat one?

Goal Call Monday: October 27

It’s time to plan your weight loss and fitness goals for the week.

My goal for this week is to workout at least 3x, drink 8-12 glasses of water a day and keep writing in my food journal (more focus on portion control).

I have to do this all during the week because we have other obligations over the weekend and won’t be able to make it to the gym.  Phooey!

I hope that this is the last week I have to nurse the knee.  This pain is really quite annoying but I’m hoping for the best.

What are your personal weight loss and fitness goals for the week?

My Workouts for the Week of 10/20-10/26 2008

This week went pretty well. I met part of the goal I set and that was to workout at least 3x. I did upper body once.

Monday-
27 min. Walk Away the Pounds Fast Firming

Tuesday-

Wednesday-
30 min. Elliptical
15 min. exercise bike

Thursday-

Friday-

Saturday-
20 min. Elliptical (no resistance)
60 min. Spin class (no resistance/gears, just cardio)

Sunday-
6 min. Elliptical (no resistance)
50 min. Spin class (no resistance/gears, just cardio)

I think this week went pretty well considering. I did get to pick up my New Balance shoes on Friday so I wore them at the gym this weekend. Very nice shoes! I’m still icing the knee but I’m really hoping after this week there will be NO pain so I can resume a normal workout schedule.

How was your week?

Eating Well

Time for your Fit & Healthy Friday Tip

Today’s Tip:  Eating Well

Always try to be conscious of the way you eat.  Are you chewing slowly or are you in a rush and eating too fast?  Think about the reason why you are eating.  Are you truly hungry or are you just eating because you’re bored?  Mindful eating, being aware of how you are eating will help you in the long run.

It’s also important that you do not skip breakfast.  This meal will get your day started on the right foot.  Plus it’s called breakfast for a reason, you are breaking the fast since you haven’t had anything for at least 5-8 hours.  A healthy breakfast is necessary for energy and to get your metabolism going .  If you don’t eat breakfast, you’ll most likely be starving later and definitely won’t be eating well if you’re ravenous.  I love breakfast!  It’s one of my favorite meals of the day.  You can read more about the advantages of eating breakfast and comment.
