Oh boy this day was a doozy. I got overheated and sick so it was not a good workout.  Lots of calories but I would have much rather burned less and not have heat exhaustion. Scary feeling that is for sure.

Online Fitness and Nutrition Personal Trainers

I was given a complimentary entry into the Squires Fitness program in exchange for an honest review and case study of my experience.  So over the next 12 weeks you are going to go through the entire experience with me.  If you would like to join the Squires Fitness program at anytime, let me know so we can do this together.  The plan is to check in at least once a week and most likely it will be on Sunday’s right along with my daily workout log. It’s only fitting right?

The Program

Squires Fitness has online fitness and nutrition personal trainers who design a personalized program just for you based on your individual assessments.  Their mission is to “help as many people as possible change their lives through correct exercise and nutrition by providing all the tools, advice and support they need to succeed”.  Most online fitness programs are automated but Squires Fitness seems to really be interested in their clients.  I like that.

How to Choose the Best Certified Personal Fitness Trainers

Woman with Personal Trainer Doing Situps

Choosing Personal Fitness Trainers

As you have read in past posts, my personal training contract ended and I have chosen not to renew.  This is NOT due to the trainer but rather the gym.  We have since moved on to join a new gym and although they offer personal training sessions, I have decided to go at it on my own.  For now at least.

Today I wanted to share with you tips on what to look for in personal fitness trainers.

Not all area created equal

When I first started at the gym, I ‘shopped around’ for a personal trainer.  The first one, Karen was absolutely awesome.  But I wanted to give some others a chance too just to see how we meshed together.  The 2nd trainer they put me with was definitely not for me.  He didn’t look at me when he talked, talked under his breath so I could hardly hear, had me lift weights that were obviously way too heavy and I knew the next day that I did not need to shop around any longer.  I had Karen as my trainer for a while but then she moved.  I liked her because she incorporated boxing and did a variety of different things. She changed it up and made it fun.  I also liked that she talked about healthy eating and she would give her clients printouts with healthy recipes, tips, and more.

But when she left, I started working with Scott and wasn’t sure how that would go. At first, I was sure it wouldn’t work because I was under the impression that all he focused on was the weights at the back of the gym where the big buff guys are and I did not know what to expect.  It was a bit intimidating at first however Scott made me realize that I could lift with the best of them just at a much smaller weight.  He is a trainer that makes sure all the settings, form and weight is perfect. He is also someone who paid attention and listened well.

I was most impressed that he agreed to do some things that were out of the norm for him (boxing, Bosu, etc.).  Another thing he did that stood out to me was that he came in each day sharing what he learned from trainings outside of the gym. He watched videos, read books and brought his own equipment to use in our personal training sessions.

Those are just a few things that stood out most to me and that I would recommend others look for in a trainer.  [Read more...]

March Fitness Challenge

Fitness
Welcome March!  I’m so glad you are here.  It means Spring is just around the corner.  I don’t even care that we will have to set our clocks ahead an hour in a few weeks.  I need warm weather and SUN.  Feeling the Winter blues and need a little push.  So that is why……

I’m accepting the FitBlogger Fitness challenge!

First of all, I am in the middle of the 48 Days to a Better Me so this is perfect timing.

My FitBlogger fitness challenge goal is not the same as my 48 Days challenge goals so I’ll have a couple things going at the same time.  For the FitBlogger challenge this month I want to challenge myself to do at least 150 crunches/sit ups/bicycles 3x A WEEK (and this is separate from any I do in my personal training sessions).  This is a bit of a stretch for me so that is why I’m choosing it.  I would really like to work on my core so I feel this is a good starting point.

**For those of you following, I wanted to let you know that I made a change and updated my goal.  I was not aware I could overwork my abs by doing 150 daily crunches so thanks to Suzanne’s tip, I have made the change.

Bloggy Love: The Fitnessista

Bloggy Love

The August 2009 Bloggy Love award goes to Gina, The Fitnessista.  I would consider Gina a fitness and healthy food blogger.  I love to give away these Bloggy Awards because it’s nice to show how much of an impact these bloggers really truly have on their readers.

I have been following Gina’s blog for quite some time now and I believe she is quite deserving of this award. Gina inspires me in so many ways and once you start reading her blog, you’ll figure out many of the reasons why.

Gina is a personal trainer, spin and Zumba instructor and more!  She’s amazing and really does it all.  I love that Gina freely shares her workout ideas, music play lists and more.  She’s just really cool! I might have to take a trip one day just so I can get a personal training session with the fab Gina.  It’s so much fun to hear about Gina’s gym escapades and her crazy workouts.  I love it!

Gina has so much to offer on her blog.  Be sure to check it out at The Fitnessista! The workout page is awesome along with her weight loss story.  I am always intrigued with how healthy Gina eats and secretly wish she would come teach me how to cook up all of her yummy meals.  Gina loves spicy foods, a girl after my own heart.  And I swear one day I am going to try Indian food.  It always looks so yummy when she blogs about her Indian dinners out on the town.  Wonder what Indian foods she would recommend for a beginnger? *wink*

I absolutely enjoy seeing how in love Gina is with her pilot (her hubby).  They have a great fun loving relationship which is a breath of fresh air to see.  I love to hear about their travels, quick road trips and their pets.  Never a dull moment in Fitnessista land.  You can follow Gina on Twitter to see what I mean.

Lastly, you have to check out The Fitnessista breakfast cookie and try one for yourself.  Soooo good!  In fact, I need to make myself one this week.

Be sure to visit Gina’s blog, The Fitnessista and add it to your reader.  You will be inspired on so many levels.  Enjoy!  Also, don’t forget to share the bloggy love with your favorite blogs and link back when you do.  Another fabulous blogger will be highlighted next month so come on back to see who it will be.

Bloggy Love: Healthy Tipping Point

Bloggy Love
The July 2009 Bloggy Love award goes to Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point.  I have been reading Caitlin’s blog for some time now and enjoy it a lot.  I have been inspired by her many times.  I don’t run but all of her posts about her races and running experiences have me intrigued and keep me coming back for more. You can find running tips on her blog too.

Her biking experiences have been fun too.  Caitlin is also a food blogger and I’m inspired when she shares her healthy meals and snacks.  You can read how she fuels up which includes a word on calories!  Caitlin and her hubby even run an online  supplement superstore called The Holistic Doctor Is In.  Drop by for a visit and you’ll find a wide variety of items.

Caitlin is training for the Disney marathon and is looking to raise funds for her Team in Training group who are raising the funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma.  Please help support her!  I donated, will you?

And lastly, something I have found that Caitlin started that is extremely inspiring. It’s called Operation Beautiful.  Maybe you have heard of it and maybe not but you need to read all about it.  I look forward to participating very soon.  The mission?  END FAT TALK!  Follow Operation Beautiful on Twitter and check out Caitlin on TV when Operation Beautiful was in the news.

Caitlin I thought you were so deserving of this Bloggy award because you are an inspiration to so many people. Keep up the great work and know that you are appreciated.

Everyone be sure to head on over to Healthy Tipping Point and add it to your reader. You won’t be disappointed.  And don’t forget to share the bloggy love with your favorite blogs too and link back when you do.  I’ll have another fabulous blogger to highlight next month so be sure to check back to see who it is.

PS.  Caitlin has a review of the 30 Day Shred so check it out!
